Adventures in the world of sand and salt
In the middle of our country, two large rivers, the Danube and the Tisza border a special plain landscape, which, despite its apparent monotony, includes many varied living habitats. This landscape preserves the traces of the constant change of the nature and the sign of the generations following each other.
There are many landscapes that are included in the Danube Plain between the two beds of the Danube and the Tisza, namely the Solt Plain and the Kalocsa region, the Alpári Sand Dunes, the Bugac Sand Dunes, the Dorozsma-Majsa Sand Dunes and the Loess Dunes of Kiskunság, as well as the loess plain landscapes of Illancs and Bácskain the middle of the Bácska Plains.
The total area of the county is flat, the difference between its lowest and highest points is only 80 metres. The highest point is the Ólom-hegy (174 m) near Rém and Csávoly, the lowest point is located at Kalocsa (94 m). Its surface is very varied from a hydrographic point of view. The two large rivers of the area are the Danube (running 123 km at the area of the county) and the Tisza. Its largest lakes are the Lake Szelid and the Lake Vadkert.
The Holt-Tisza (the ‘dead Tisza’ area) in Lakitelek is one of the protected areas in the Tisza region. The flora of that area is very diverse. The original “face” of the landscape is shown by the protected areas of the Kiskunság National Park, which was established in 1974.
The Kiskunság National Park - the second in the country - was established in 1974 to preserve the natural values of the Kiskunság landscape. The characteristic habitats of the national park of more than 51,000 hectares, are the saline soils and lakes, the sand dunes, the large meadows and sand forests, the marshes of the Turján region, the backwater lakes, the floodplain forests and the saline steppes. These have many natural and landscape rarities that can only be seen here.
There are many nature trails, hiking trails and bird watching observation towers in the National Park attracting the lovers of the nature. During the year, visitors can get acquainted with the varied wildlife of Kiskunságon organized tours. It is worth downloading the annual program booklet from the national park's website www.knp.hu, in which you can select your program options.
The followers of the Facebook page of the Kiskunság National Park can always get up-to-date information on the news about nature!
