The history of Bács-Kiskun County
During the history, the administrative borders of the county have changed several times resulting in the movement and changes of the administrative centres.
The present structure of the county mirrors the historical countysystem preserved for many centuries, but it was the Ottoman occupation of Hungary, the Treaty of Trianon, and finally the so-called ‘Rákosi regime’ (the hardest period of communist era) that shaped its present form and geographic scope.
The vast majority of the area of the county consists of the southern part of the former Pest-Pilis-Solt-Kiskun county and the northern part of the former Bács-Bodrog County. After the Trianon Treaty (1920) only a smaller part of the old Bács-Bodrog County remained in the territory of the present-day Hungary. Originally, the county spread from Baja to Újvidék (now, Novi Sad), and it was divided by the Ferenc Canal to Bács and Bodrog, since also the former county was unified in the 18th century.
Surprisingly, the former Bodrog County on the north was basically closer to the current administrative borders, so it is hard to understand how the word 'Bács' has been included in the county's name. It would be more reasonable to call our county Bodrog-Kiskun County, since the original Bács County does not have any territory that belongs to today's Hungary.
However, in the names of some settlements along the border, we can still find the prefix of 'Bács' what can make the impression that using the name is completely legitimate and it has a historical justification. This is due to the fact that Bodrog was the word that started to be missing from the name of the historical name of Bács-Bodrog county. Bodrog, which was a small county started to vanish and the descendants simply left out its name from the county's name. Thus, municipalities belonging to the old Bács County can be found within our borders nowadays,as they are settlements of the northern part of Bácska.
Between the vicious transformations of centuries, it is interesting that the original, historical Bács County was more than 150 kilometres away. Apart from this, social consciousness, companies, associations, and products use the "by Bács County" sign, which is now a recognised mark and an accepted identity.
